Maryland Bill Protecting Bees Becomes Law & Connecticut’s Passes Congress
UPDATE — to our previous article, “Maryland is the First State to Pass Bill Protecting Bees from Pesticides”.
The Corporate Shift to Cage-Free Eggs & What It Really Means
In the past year, chances are you’ve heard at least one large corporation proudly announce their pledge to shift to entirely cage-free eggs. It seems to be the newest way for companies to meet the demands of the growing “food movement”. Target, Denny’s, McDonald’s, Burger King, Subway, even Walmart — the nation’s largest food retailer — have all pledged to go entirely cage-free… but what exactly does that mean, and is it as impressive as it seems?
New FDA Nutrition Labels to Distinguish Between Naturally Occurring and “Added” Sugars & More
For the first time in more than two decades, the FDA has changed the requirements for nutrition labeling on food. According to the May 20 news release, the FDA has modernized the requirements in order to “help people make informed decisions about the foods they eat and feed their families.”
House Committee’s Draft Bill Could Reduce the Fresh Produce Served in Schools
The Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program (FFVP) has been combating childhood obesity by providing low-income elementary school students free fresh fruits and vegetables in all 50 states since 2008. Despite evidence that the program has made significant positive impacts on the health of participating students, a draft bill in Congress could alter the program’s focus on fresh produce.

First Saturday in May is World Naked Gardening Day: Your chance to be one with nature
Yes, you read that right. The first Saturday of May is the annual World Naked Gardening Day, when people are encouraged to, you know, tend their garden in the nude. As May approaches, so go the days of tapping maple trees to collect their sweet sap. It’s the end of the maple syrup season, and in places like Quebec and Vermont, two of the world’s largest producers (77% and 5.5%, respectively, of global supply), maple operations are transforming sap to syrups in massive quantities. But how exactly is maple syrup graded?
Know Your Farmer: Rossitsa Owens at Herbal Poetry
It’s important to remember that farming, doesn’t just mean for food — so for this edition of “Know Your Farmer”, we’re going to be profiling one of our producers on the site who sells natural soap and skin products. Just like food, the production of items like these has an impact on our health and the environment, so it’s equally important to buy eco-products, as it is eco-farmed food. Rossitsa Owens of Herbal Poetry understands this, and does her part by creating her products with herbs grown in her own garden, and honey, beeswax, and propolis from her own beehives, full of happy bees. Take a closer look at who Rossitsa is, and why she’s into bee-ing green! (…see what I did there?)
The Short and Sweet Maple Syrup Season: How it Works
The thought of maple syrup evokes a variety of images for people depending on who you ask. Some think of Canada, others a short stack like their mom used to serve it. Whatever maple syrup reminds you of, one thing is certain, people love it. So while we’re still in the rather short maple syrup season, let’s talk about some maple syrup basics.
