The Spiritual Food CSA helps mobilize support for a form of agriculture that offers the best chance of rescuing the planet. Regenerative Agriculture - of which Biodynamics is the pre-eminent example – has received global recognition since the Paris Climate talks for its potential to draw down carbon from the atmosphere and thus save the planet from catastrophe, restore its health and consequently secure the future of our families and fellow human beings. As members, we play our part in caring for Mother Nature. We participate in a form of activism for peace and the well-being of humankind that does not require extra time, demonstrations, or conflictive actions. It is the power of our unified thoughts - once we come to clear understanding of the mission we embark upon -- that will have a ripple effect across the planet.

CSA is structured to eliminate usury and waste, share risk in human cooperation, and pave the road to a better future. It is to learn the benefit of community and the abundance of nature. It replaces price gauging with fair play for both consumers and farmers in an environment of trust and social friendship.

Every person who joins a CSA --provided it is in arrangement directly with farmers -- helps a farmer detach from the predatory market forces that discourage localization and diversification needed to stabilize the food economy, build soil capacity, end pesticide contamination, ensure proper food safety regulations, reduce farm debt, and increase the number of young farmers. In other words, save farms that some say are being lost at the rate of 40 acres every hour in the US.

Biodynamics is a holistic, ecological, and ethical approach to farming, gardening, food and nutrition. The word means “working with the energies which create and maintain life.” It is a world-wide non-chemical agriculture movement begun in 1924 that actively restores the depleted life-giving forces of the planet concentrating cosmic and earthly energies into special preparations that act like homeopathic remedies for the microbial, plant, and animal life on the farm. Studies show Biodynamic produce has concentrated nutrient value, increasing vitality, immune function and feeling of overall well-being.

The food: We are inspired by the belief that True Food nourishes the body and the human spirit.

The farmer: Rudolf Steiner who gave the impulse for Biodynamics said one has only to penetrate this material world to discover that it is indeed the spiritual world. The farmer, mediating between the realms of nature (mineral, plant, animal) and human is creating a new agriculture which supports more evolved forms of life.

The community: This CSA is sponsored by the School of Life, a yoga-centered spiritual community near downtown Bethesda. Members can participate by setting up on Wednesdays or bagging dry goods at home to get a good experience of behind-the-scenes in bringing this special food from farm to table. Members also may share recipe ideas, join the annual farm tour, attend events at the School of Life, or even volunteer at serving fresh-cooked, nutritious meals to the homeless of Washington DC.
