Late-Night Snacking: Do's and Don'ts

Some information and advice for those that like to grab a midnight snack.
Late-Night Snacking: Do's and Don'ts
Hunger does not always present itself at the most convenient moments, especially in today's hectic lifestyle. You may sometimes find yourself looking for something to eat right before heading to bed. What should you do in this situation? What would be best for your body? Well, the answer to the first question is simple: eat! It is, however, very important to pick out the right food: some choices may leave you with a disturbed sleep, and some may even keep you from falling asleep at all!

Here are some of the types of food you'll want to avoid at the late hour.
Late-Night Snacking: Do's and Don'ts
1. Bread, ice cream, baked goods, candy, and cakes
These products contain a lot of sugar. Eating them will release endorphins and leave you in a euphoric state. You may feel relaxed right after consuming these products, but just a few short hours later you may find your sense of bliss rudely interrupted by heartburn or indigestion. Some scientists even claim that sugary foods may lead to nightmares. But the main reason to avoid such snacks? Extra pounds.

2. Canned meats, salted foods, spices, mayonnaise, and spicy sauces
Eating these products for a midnight snack could result in indigestion. And in the morning, you may even discover your face swelling: salt has been shown to facilitate water retention in the body. These foods also make it difficult to fall asleep. They affect the nervous system, making you feel agitated and energetic.

3. Sliced meats, chips, nuts, and cheeses
These snacks will make it difficult to fall asleep, and could put you in a negative mood in the morning. Your stomach will need to work overtime throughout the night to digest these types of food, and that is not good for your digestive system. Instead, have some light soup that's full of vegetables. Just remember the first point: no bread.

4. Red meat
Another food that takes time to digest fully, more so during the night while you sleep. This will lead to harmful toxins, formed during digestion, to stay in your body for longer periods of time. Instead, eat a small piece of baked fish, turkey, or chicken breast.

When eating at night, be sure to remember the golden rule: No snack should exceed 200 calories! And, of course, no matter how carefully you select your foods, it's best not to let midnight snacking become a habit.
